Homemade Sports Drink Guidelines

Gatorade was the first sports drink developed in the 1960s and was specially designed to provide energy in the form of carbohydrates and to replace electrolyte lost through sweat. Athletes that vigorously exercise for 60-90 minutes MINIMUM will benefit from using sports drinks during competition or training. Sports drinks are not recommended for athletes exercising less than that. It would simply add too many calories that are not needed for the activity.

To stay away from the extra chemicals and save some money, it is very easy to make your own homemade sports drink with only 3 simple ingredients. But remember, if you are not exercising vigorously for more than an hour, stick to water.

Two sample recipes are included to help get you started.
